PIER 24 PHOTOGRAPHY

If you've never been to Pier 24, now would be a good time to change your ways. The current exhibition, which runs through 1/31/17, brings together some of the best of the permanent Pilara collection and works on loan from other Bay Area collections. The show was curated by nine prominent collectors, resulting in a display of nine distinctly different opinions about what makes for great photography. I guarantee that you'll see photography differently, more broadly, after a careful look at this show.

Located on San Francisco’s Embarcadero in a warehouse that I once scaled on my way to the top of the Bay Bridge, Pier 24 Photography provides a quiet, contemplative environment for viewing photographic works. Pier 24 Photography houses the permanent collection of the Pilara Foundation, which is dedicated to collecting, preserving and exhibiting photography. They seek to engage the community through exhibitions, publications, and public programs, and welcome members of the public, academic institutions, and museum groups for self-guided tours that last up to two hours. Pier 24 Photography is free and open to the public Monday through Friday by appointment. -TM
